Sodium is a chemical element with the symbol of Na with the atomic number of 11. It is an alkali metal being in group 1 if the periodic table. It is whitish in appearance, but it is incredibly reactive. It was discovered by Humphrey Davy in 1807 by the electrolysis of sodium hydroxide. The mineral sodium chloride is used to de-ice roads and as a seasoning. It is a form of electrolyte which is crucial to muscle contraction, while potassium is also crucial to muscle relaxation. It is crucial to animals and some plants and sodium ions are the major cation of extracellular fluid.

Osmotic gradient Edit

Sodium chloride has an osmotic gradient and loss of water can lead to the condition of hypernatremia.
